How to Become a Successful Lawyer – Legal Strategy by Lasha Janibegashvili
To reach the pinnacle of the legal profession, one needs more than just a degree. It requires deep knowledge, constant self-development, authority, and the ability to combine legal statues into winning combinations for your client. Competence, integrity, a stellar reputation, and placing the client’s interests above all else are the hallmarks of a true leader in law.
A Lesson in Integrity: The Betrayal of a Client
I will give you an example: I was once friends with a criminal defense lawyer handling a domestic violence case (Article 126¹). I connected him with a person who desperately needed help. However, during the essential court hearing, this lawyer—whom I considered a competent friend—failed to show up simply because he had a "cold," despite having already pocketed a large fee.
Upon hearing this, I immediately severed all professional ties and removed all mention of him from my platforms. His client, an innocent man, was forced to flee to Turkey and remains an exile today, having effectively abandoned his business in Georgia. This is a classic case of sacrificing a client's trust for greed. It is, quite frankly, a form of fraud.
How to Become a Successful Lawyer
-
Practical Experience: Active participation in court trials is vital. Surrounding yourself with successful lawyers can provide immense motivation.
-
Constant Qualification: You must study precedents and legal practices as thoroughly as possible.
-
Charisma and Oratory: You must work on yourself to develop the gift of persuasion and public speaking.
-
Fearlessness: To be a leader, you must be brave, persistent, and willing to take risks. You must be an uncompromising fighter against injustice.
Protect the oppressed, often even pro bono, and do not hesitate to dismantle the powerful and the oppressors legally. Expose their crimes and challenge anyone who opposes the truth.
Confronting Corruption: The Court vs. The People
When facing corrupt judges or prosecutors, your best weapon is publicity. Remember: while a judge makes a decision in the courtroom and a prosecutor influences the investigation, you must be the leader of the people outside the courtroom.
The Risks of Success: A "Knife in the Back"
How Lawyers Build Public Authority
If you are a brave, influential advocate who challenges the powerful, be prepared for provocations. They will air false reports on television to ruin your name. But most surprisingly, the first "knife in your back" will likely come from the Bar Association.
If you become a true champion for the people with a massive following—I have nearly 200,000 subscribers and 4 million monthly viewers—you become a threat to the establishment. The Bar Association’s Disciplinary Board, often comprised of unsuccessful or compromised lawyers installed by the authorities, may use "selective justice" against you.
They will question your every move to shake your psychological resolve. I compare the Disciplinary Board to a "nest of snakes"—lawyers who enter that process often come out changed, their courage extinguished by a "freezing effect."
Personal Experience of State Marginalization
Since I openly challenged the Bar Association in the Constitutional Court in 2019, I have faced:
-
4 Slanderous TV Reports: Despite proving my innocence through the Charter of Ethics, the reports remain online, and the Bar Association has remained silent, suggesting their complicity.
-
12 Formal Investigations: There are currently 12 criminal cases opened regarding illegal acts committed against me, yet the Prosecutor’s Office continues to marginalize these cases, refusing to act.
When you become successful and uncontrollable, they will dig up a Facebook comment from three years ago to start disciplinary proceedings. It is no coincidence that the new Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia is being built right in front of the Bar Association building. That says everything you need to know.
I wish you success in your journey toward justice.
